Members of the House of Representatives have implored all Security Agencies to expeditiously deploy pre-emptive measures to avert further loss of lives, limbs and properties via acts of terrorism.
This call was sequel to a Motion moved by Hon. Patrick Ikhariale (Esan Central/ Esan West/Igueben Federal Constituency) who drew the attention of the House to the recent bombing of the United Nations building in Abuja on the 26th of August 2011 by terrorists.
Leading the debate on the Motion, the lawmaker stressed that terrorism was indeed alien to Nigeria and would bring no good to the country especially in the eyes of the international community.
He also expressed concern over the failure of the various Security Agencies to halt the spate of bombings in Nigeria despite their claim to have had prior knowledge of imminent attacks.
The spate of bombings in Nigeria and the attendant reckless destruction of lives and property following the activities of miscreants he said should not be overlooked. It was an issue that required urgent attention and solutions, he added. He therefore prayed the House to invite the Heads of the various Security Agencies to a closed hearing.
This he held, would give these Agencies the opportunity to explain the various measures they have taken so far in a bid to forestall future occurrences of terrorism with a view to determining what the House should do in terms of making relevant laws to address the malaise of terrorism.
The House will also send a high- powered delegation of its leadership to formally convey its heartfelt condolences to the United Nations through its representatives in Nigeria while extra security measures will be taken at border posts to eliminate or reduce to the barest minimum the influx of criminals and terrorists into Nigeria.
Lawmakers unanimously supported the motion with the prayers contained therein.
