Constitution of Committee: The Core Objective is Service-Tambuwal
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has implored all House members to focus on the core objective for constituting House standing committees which is service.
He made this appeal while announcing the names of Chairmen and Deputy Chairmen of the various Standing Committees of the House of recently. The Speaker said, at this period of our history, it would be unhelpful for lawmakers to view some committees as superior to others or that one committee was more juicy than the other.
The leadership of the House and the selection committee, according to the Speaker have tried to be fair to everyone, stressing that areas of core competences of members were looked into and deployed such talents effectively.
Earlier in his address, the Speaker underscored the role of Standing Committees in the business of the legislature saying ‘I can hardly overstate its centrality to carrying out our basic brief”. He emphasized that, “the legislative or parliamentary committees have evolved as vibrant and central institutions of modern democracies all over the world and Nigeria is no exception.”
He advised the members that the committees were micro reflection of the larger house and therefore, their operations and activities must be held to standards of efficiency, transparency and accountability.
