The Speaker disclosed that the House would ensure speedy passage of the Mass Literacy Bill and the Nomadic Education Bills once the Bills are presented to it by the Executive or as a private Member Bill.

Earlier in his remarks, the Minister of State, Barrister Ezenwo called for the support of the House towards the transformation agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan by providing necessary legislations that would help in realizing government objectives especially in the education sector. The Minister noted that the educational institutes in Nigeria, especially the Unity Schools were in deplorable conditions, adding that all arms of Government needed to complement each other if these schools were to be returned to their former state of effectiveness.

The Minister who described education as the bedrock of development, stressed the education ministry’s resolve to ensure it attains its Millennium Development Goal target of the enrolment of every child within the primary school age bracket into a primary school by 2015. He pleaded for the speedy amendment of the UBEC Act to also cater for Senior Secondary Schools, as it currently only caters for the primary and junior secondary schools, while the ETF Act already takes care of the tertiary institutes.
