Staff of the Information and Publications Department of National Assembly, at a three-day Speech Making Training have been urged to ardently internalize the art and techniques of Speech Writing and Speech Making, as it is a very important aspect of their occupation and responsibilities.
Coordinating Consultant, National Assembly institute, Abuja, Mr. Niyi Laniyan made this call while presenting his welcome address to the participants of the workshop held at the Institute’s premises in Asokoro, Abuja.
Laniyan, who noted that there will always be the need for Speech making in every area of the Information and Publication Department’s Staff endeavors, stated that the Institute was by the training, preparing them for their present and future roles. According to him, “this training prepares you for future opportunities and challenges. You may not use these information acquired now, but the need will certainly arise in the nearest future. The knowledge you acquire through training belongs to you. You can use it in your current work situation or whenever the need arises.”
He counseled participants to have an open mind towards the course and soak in as much knowledge as possible from the resource persons assuring them that the benefits of the workshop will be unquantifiable in the long run.
Among the resource persons for the workshop were two lecturers of English Language: Dr. Adeleke A. Fakoya of Lagos State University and Dr. Kehinde A. Ayoola of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. During the three –day workshop, they took the participants through a rundown of the basics technicalities of Speech Writing and Speech Making under the following course titles: Facts of Speech, Interactive Speech Analysis and Grammar of Speech. Other topics included Speech Intelligence Factor, Fear of Public Speaking and Rules of Effective Speech Writing.
Both facilitators while delivering their lectures, placed much emphasis on the fact that every speech must meet the criteria of: APT; Acceptance, Persuasion and Timelessness. Acceptance refers to the need for speech maker to gauge his/her language to meet the need of the people listening.
