House to Prioritize Capacity Building

Capacity building for both legislators and parliamentary staff would continue to receive priority attention from the House of Representatives.  Speaker of the House, Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal stated this when he received a delegation from the Institute of Chattered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) led by its president Professor Francis Ojaide.

The Speaker noted the contribution of ICAN in areas of human capital development and assured that the House would continue to tap from their vast knowledge in areas of finance, account and accountability.  “ICAN has done wonderfully well in areas of capability and human development and I urge you to continue in this spirit by guiding the parliament in its activities because this House under my leadership will give high premium to capacity building for us and for our staff.”

He said the House was keenly interested in partnering and collaborating with professional organizations such as ICAN in ensuring that Nigeria attained considerable level of development within the shortest possible time.

He promised that the House will take a look at the ICAN Ad with a view to reviewing it to conform with the present day realities.

Earlier, ICAN president, Professor Francis Ojaide had requested for the National Assembly’s approval of a joint capacity development programme for its members and a joint programme for budget analysis and review in order to highlight areas that require interventions to improve overall budget performance.

He also indicated the readiness of the Institute to carry out a capacity development programme for Finance staff of the National Assembly.

The ICAN president who elaborated on the activities ICAN to include design and review of Internal Control system, budget preparation and implementation as well as ensuring compliance with best code of Corporate Governance, transparency and accountability. He called for the review of the ICAN Act of 1965 in order to bring it in line with current developments in the local and global accountancy profession.
